Autumn is a season of transition. The air grows cooler, the days shorter, and the wind picks up. In Ayurveda this is known as Vata Season - a time when the qualities of cold, lightness, dryness and movement naturally rise in our bodies and minds. In my practice, in Exeter, I often see clients notice these shifts in their skin, sleep and mood, as autumn arrives.

When Vata becomes imbalanced, we may experience dry skin, anxiety, poor sleep, joint discomfort or irregular digestion, The good news? Warm oil massage (Abhyanga) is one of the most effective ways to restore balance, calm and stability.

Here's how Ayurvedic massage can support you this Autumn:

  • Moisturises Dry Skin

The cool, dry air of autumn often leaves skin rough or flaky. Warm oil massage nourishes the tissues deeply, leaving your skin soft, glowing and protected.

  • Calms the Nervous System

Vata governs movement and the nervous system. When aggravated, it can bring anxiety, restlessness, or scattered thoughts. Massage with warm oil soothes the nerves and restores a sense of calm.

  • Promotes Restful Sleep

If your mind races at bedtime or you find yourself waking in the night, you're not alone.

Massage before bed helps quieten the mind and prepare the body for deep nourishing sleep.

  • Relieves Joint Stiffness

Cool and dry conditions can make joints creaky or stiff. Ayurvedic oils penetrate deeply,

warming and lubricating the joints, improving mobility and comfort.

  • Improves circulation & Energy

Sluggish circulation is common in autumn. Massage stimulates warmth and healthy blood flow, helping the whole body feel more alive and energised.

  • Strengthens Immunity

Seasonal change can challenge the immune system Abhyanga builds Ojas - the Ayurvedic essence of vitality - strengthening the bodies natural defences.

Balances Mood & Emotions

The airy, unsettled qualities of Vata can make us feel ungrounded. Massage helps anchor the mind, reduce emotional turbulence, and restore a sense of inner steadiness.

Autumn is the perfect time to make self-care a seasonal ritual. Regular

Ayurvedic massage supports balance, strength, and calm during

this period of change. If you've been feeling the effects of Vata - dryness, restlessness, joint stiffness, or poor sleep - now is the ideal time to experience the grounding power of Abhyanga.

If you are based in or around Exeter and would like to experience the grounding power of Abhyanga, I'd love to welcome you to my practice.
